2025 Abu Dhabi GP FP2 Highlights: Lando Norris Tops Max Verstappen & George Russell! (2026)

Get ready for an exciting race weekend in Abu Dhabi! The battle for pole position is heating up, and it's not just about the usual suspects.

In a thrilling turn of events, McLaren's Lando Norris took the lead during the second practice session, outpacing Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Mercedes' George Russell. But here's where it gets controversial... Norris' teammate, Oscar Piastri, started the weekend on a different note, finishing a modest 11th.

Norris, with a time of 1:23.083 on Pirelli's soft tires, showcased his skills, leaving Verstappen 0.363 seconds behind. Russell, ever the competitor, was a close third, just 0.016 seconds off the pace.

The practice session saw a mix of rookies and seasoned racers. After the first practice session featured nine rookie drivers, the second practice brought back some familiar faces, including Piastri, who opted to sit out the initial session.

Despite some last-minute adjustments to his McLaren, Piastri hit the track early and smoothly got his practice underway. However, there was a moment of drama involving Verstappen and Norris, with some radio confusion leading to a close call at Turn 1. Fortunately, no penalties were issued.

As the session progressed, it was the Racing Bulls rookie, Isack Hadjar, who took the lead with a time of 1:24.167 on soft tires. But it was short-lived as Verstappen and Norris quickly improved their times, with Norris ultimately setting the fastest lap of the session.

Practice 2 Results:

  1. Lando Norris (McLaren) - 1:23.083
  2. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) - +0.363s
  3. George Russell (Mercedes) - +0.379s
  4. Oliver Bearman (Haas) - +0.418s
  5. Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber) - +0.467s

And this is the part most people miss... Piastri, the championship contender, struggled to find his rhythm, finishing a disappointing 10th in his first qualifying-style simulation.

Meanwhile, there were technical issues for Williams, with Carlos Sainz experiencing a dramatic snap through the high-speed turns, and Alex Albon reporting engine troubles.

As the session drew to a close, drivers focused on longer runs to gather data for the upcoming race. Norris' early pace-setting effort remained unbeaten, with Verstappen and Russell close behind.

Haas' Oliver Bearman impressed, finishing fourth, while the Saubers of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto also performed admirably. Hadjar, another young talent, finished seventh, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

The final practice session is set to begin at 1430 local time on Saturday, and with so much at stake, the battle for grid positions is sure to intensify. Who will emerge as the favorite? Only time will tell. Don't miss the action!

What do you think? Will Norris' early pace carry over to qualifying? Or will Verstappen and Russell fight back? Share your predictions in the comments!
