Are We Becoming Slaves to AI's Intelligence?
Imagine relying on a machine to tell you if your fruit is ripe, or whether to evacuate your home because of a potentially falling tree. Sounds extreme, right? But for some, this is becoming a reality. As we mark ChatGPT's third anniversary, it's time to confront a growing phenomenon: the outsourcing of our thinking to artificial intelligence.

Take Tim Metz, a content marketer who spends up to eight hours a day interacting with AI, particularly Anthropic's Claude. He consults it for everything from marriage advice to grocery shopping decisions. Recently, Claude's suggestion to evacuate his home due to a potentially falling tree (which thankfully didn't fall) highlights the extent of his reliance. Metz admits, "Without Claude’s input, I would have never left the house."
Metz isn't alone. A growing number of individuals are becoming what some call "LLeMmings" – constantly turning to Large Language Models (LLMs) for guidance, their critical thinking skills potentially atrophying in the process. They compose emails, make life decisions, and even seek emotional support through AI, raising concerns about the erosion of human agency and independent thought.
The Allure and the Danger:
The allure of AI is undeniable. It offers instant answers, companionship, and a sense of control. But this convenience comes at a cost. As neuroscientist Tim Requarth points out, AI exploits our brain's natural tendency to conserve energy, offering cognitive shortcuts that can lead to dependence. Chatbots, designed to provide compelling responses, can even reinforce delusional thinking, a phenomenon dubbed "AI psychosis."
A Double-Edged Sword:
James Bedford, an educator, experienced this firsthand. He found himself reaching for ChatGPT to solve a simple problem – retrieving a lost AirPod – instead of relying on his own problem-solving skills. This realization prompted a month-long AI detox, during which he rediscovered the clarity of independent thought. Yet, the pull of AI proved too strong, and he returned to its embrace.
The Business of Dependence:
The irony is palpable. While companies like OpenAI acknowledge the problem of excessive reliance, their business model thrives on it. Premium subscriptions and user engagement are their lifeblood. OpenAI's recent introduction of "study mode," designed to encourage independent learning, seems like a step in the right direction. However, it remains to be seen if such measures can counterbalance the inherent incentive for dependence.
Breaking Free:
Some users are taking matters into their own hands. Bedford's #NoAIDecember challenge encourages people to prioritize their "real intelligence" over artificial assistance. Others, like Mike Kentz, an AI-literacy consultant, are consciously limiting their reliance on chatbots for tasks they were once confident in handling themselves.
The Future of Thinking:
The rise of AI presents us with a crucial question: Will we become extensions of our machines, or will we harness their power while preserving our unique human capacity for independent thought and creativity? The answer lies not just in the technology itself, but in our ability to use it mindfully and ethically.
