In my opinion, the answer is a bit of a mixed bag, with some impressive features and some major shortcomings.
One thing that immediately stands out is the design. The glasses themselves are bulky and garish, with a thick hood housing the displays and an angular design that doesn't quite work. The outward-facing lenses, while not as bad as some competitors like the Viture Beast, still look a bit out of place. The ROG branding is prominent on the temples, with RGB lighting zones that can be customized, but the overall aesthetic is a bit too flashy for my taste.
The dock, which is required to purchase the glasses, is another area of concern. It's a generic-looking hunk of plastic with some RGB lighting, but it's the functionality that's truly disappointing. The dock has two USB-C ports, two HDMI ports, and a DisplayPort, but the big selling point of plugging in a gaming PC or console is marred by a glitchy 240Hz mode that causes a strange shimmer effect. This is a major letdown, especially considering the competition offers similar features at a lower price.
In terms of performance, the glasses themselves are decent. With a 1080p display and a 120Hz refresh rate, games look great, and the text is easier to read than on some other XR glasses. However, the sweet spot is a smaller display in follow mode, as stretching it out to a larger size can make the image look pixelated. The instant 3D mode is a cool feature, but it only works when plugged directly into a handheld device, not the dock.
Overall, the Asus ROG XReal R1 has some impressive features, but the dock's shortcomings and the glasses' bulky design make it a less-than-ideal choice. Personally, I think the competition offers better value and performance, and I'd recommend gamers to look elsewhere for their XR glasses.
