Matthew Hamilton, a standout swimmer from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, recently showcased his talent at the European Aquatics Championships (SCM), where he achieved personal bests in the 50 butterfly (23.91) and 100 butterfly (52.60). Hamilton expressed his excitement, saying, ‘I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to Auburn University, where I will continue my swimming journey for the next four years. Earlier this year, Hamilton competed at the LEN European Junior Championships (LCM), finishing 13th in the 100 fly semifinals with a time of 54.08. His prelims time of 53.82 marked a new personal best. He also placed 16th in the 50 free with a time of 23.11. Hamilton’s long-course bests include 50.35 in the 100 free and 1:54.32 in the 200 free. When converted to short-course yards (SCY), his times project him as a strong contender in multiple events, though just outside the alternate positions in the SEC Championships.
And this is the part most people miss: While Hamilton’s times are impressive, his potential to improve under Auburn’s coaching could be a game-changer. Could he be the swimmer to break into the SEC finals and beyond?
Peder Saur Hubred, a Swedish diving prodigy, has already made a name for himself on the international stage. At the 2024 World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships, he achieved personal bests on the 1-meter (334.25), 3-meter (416.60), and 10-meter platform (365.00). Two years prior, at just 15, he competed in the World Junior Diving Championships, finishing 22nd in the 1-meter event with a score of 295.55.
Here’s where it gets controversial: With Auburn’s diving team lacking finalists in the 3-meter event at the SEC Championships, Saur Hubred’s arrival could be a turning point. But will he be able to make an immediate impact in such a competitive conference?
Auburn’s current diving lineup includes Whit Andrus, who finished 7th in the 1-meter at SECs with a score of 340.10, and Talan Blackmon, who placed 16th with 298.10. On the platform, Andrus scored 327.70, landing him in 13th place. Saur Hubred’s addition strengthens the team’s depth, but the question remains: Can Auburn’s divers finally crack the SEC finals across all events?
