Recently, Brandon Beane, the General Manager of the Buffalo Bills, shed light on why the team opted not to wait for potential candidates from the Super Bowl teams during their search for a new head coach. The Bills conducted interviews with 20 different prospects for the position but did not include Klint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. This decision stemmed from missing the opportunity to conduct a virtual interview with him during the bye week.
Beane provided insights into this decision during the introductory press conference for newly appointed coach Joe Brady. He articulated, "Due to the timing of our coaching change and the commencement of our search, we were prohibited from engaging with coaches who were still active in the postseason. So, we decided to initiate the process with those coaches whose seasons had concluded. Unfortunately, according to the rules, we couldn’t even have a Zoom meeting with anyone from the remaining playoff teams. While it would have been tempting to wait, doing so would have unfairly disadvantaged both the candidates and the Bills, considering that coaching staffs are typically finalized soon after the Super Bowl. Waiting longer wouldn’t be fair to them or to us."
This is not just a matter of preference; it is a reflection of the overarching challenges posed by the current regulations governing coaching interviews. A notable example occurred three years ago when the Arizona Cardinals found themselves in trouble for interviewing Jonathan Gannon, then the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, during the bye week before the Super Bowl. Had the Bills attempted to contact Kubiak, they risked encountering a similar predicament. By the time the Super Bowl concluded, other teams, like the Raiders, might have already secured Kubiak’s services.
Beane has been a long-time advocate for reevaluating the coaching hiring process. He remarked, "I’ve consistently supported modifying how we approach hiring. While I can suggest changes, I don’t set the rules myself. My primary responsibility is to act in the best interests of the Buffalo Bills. Once we reached this juncture, it seemed unwise to delay further. We needed to find our ideal candidate as swiftly as possible. Fortunately, we had several strong options among the nine candidates we considered, which ultimately led us to conclude that Joe was the right fit for the role."
At the heart of Beane's statements lies the notion of fairness.
