Fishermen Rescue Caribou Trapped in Sea Ice - Incredible Wildlife Rescue in Port au Choix (2026)

A heartwarming and heroic act unfolded recently in Port au Choix when two local fishermen stepped up to save a caribou that had fallen through the treacherous sea ice and found itself floundering in the frigid waters.

Captured in a striking video shared by Brandon Gould on Facebook, this dramatic rescue highlights not only the challenges faced by wildlife in harsh winter conditions but also the compassion of those who live in close connection with nature.

The caribou, struggling to regain its footing on the continuously breaking ice, was unable to swim back to safety due to the surrounding frozen barriers. It was indeed a precarious situation for the animal, one that could have ended tragically without intervention.

That’s when Vernon Lavers and Milton Offrey sprang into action. Using their fishing boat, they strategically carved a path through the thick ice, creating a safe route for the stranded caribou to reach the shore. This courageous effort enabled the animal to finally get back on solid ground and stand on all fours once again.

According to Gould, who documented the entire event, the caribou, despite its ordeal in the chilly water, appeared to be just fine afterward. "She ran down the road, out over Cliff Rock," Gould remarked, noting that the animal seemed quite healthy after the rescue.

This incident serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of humans and wildlife, especially in challenging environments. But here's where it gets controversial: should we intervene in nature, or is it best to let natural processes take their course? What are your thoughts? Do you agree with the actions of the fishermen, or do you think wildlife should be left to fend for itself? Join the conversation and share your opinions!
