Festive celebrations are reportedly contributing to a surge in flu cases, placing additional strain on the NHS. Christmas and New Year parties have been identified as the primary culprits behind this recent increase in flu-related hospitalizations. The number of people being admitted to hospitals with the flu in England rose by nine percent in the week following Christmas, following a downward trend that saw 3,140 cases in the week ending December 14th. During the week ending January 4th, the average daily number of flu patients in hospitals reached 2,924, a nine percent increase from the previous week's 2,676 cases. Prof. Meghana Pandit, the NHS national medical director, emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by the NHS, noting a rise in flu and other respiratory virus cases among hospital patients in the last week. The latest NHS data also reveals a sharp increase in the proportion of patients experiencing long waits in ambulances outside hospitals in England before being transferred to A&E teams. Approximately 33 percent of patients arriving by ambulance at hospitals last week, including New Year's Eve, one of the busiest nights for 999 crews, waited at least half an hour to be handed over. This figure represents a significant increase from the previous week's 18 percent. Moreover, 12 percent of ambulance handovers, involving 11,805 patients, were delayed by over an hour, a four percent increase from the previous week. Both figures are the highest so far this winter. Hospital bed occupancy in England has also risen by five percent, reaching just under 92 percent. Amid these concerns, the UK Health Security Agency has advised individuals to wear face masks if they exhibit flu symptoms, as hospitals are expected to face challenges in managing virus cases. Prof. Pandit highlighted the impact of cold weather, noting an increase in vulnerable patients with respiratory issues in A&E and more injuries from slips and falls due to icy conditions. She praised the dedication of healthcare staff and the efforts of teams across the country to ensure patients receive necessary care. The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, urged eligible individuals to get their flu jab promptly, emphasizing the seriousness of flu, particularly for older people, young children, and those with underlying conditions. He stressed the importance of timely action to prevent hospitalizations, support NHS staff during the winter months, and ensure emergency care for those in need.
