Jack Whitehall, a familiar face as he hosted the prestigious music ceremony for the sixth time, found himself at the center of a censorship storm. This year's BRITs marked a significant shift, moving from its long-time London base to the vibrant city of Manchester. Among the notable attendees was Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, who was present at the brand-new Co-Op Live arena.
As is his tradition, Whitehall playfully teased the guests. He made a jab at Mr. Burnham, referencing his political standing within the Labour Party with a quip about "the only party he’s allowed into these days." He then pointed out the "politicians’ table," wondering aloud who else might be present.
But here's where it gets controversial... The subsequent remark, which was bleeped out by the ITV broadcast, has since been revealed. According to PA reports, Whitehall's unbleeped joke was aimed at Lord Peter Mandelson, who recently distanced himself from the Labour Party due to his alleged connection with Jeffrey Epstein. Whitehall's comment was, "I wonder who else is here. I think that I saw Peter Mandelson on the guest list."
And this is the part most people miss... Whitehall's joke wasn't the only instance of censorship during the evening. Noel Gallagher also had his speech cut short when he was honored as Songwriter of the Year. His comment, reportedly about supporting Manchester City, was met with boos from a portion of the audience who are not fans of the football club. Other censored moments included remarks from the Brooklyn indie band Geese and reality TV personality Angry Ginge.
On social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, viewers expressed their frustration. Many questioned the purpose of live broadcasting if key moments were going to be silenced. Comments like, "What is the point in this if they’re just going to bleep everything out," and "It's just turned 9pm, bore off with the bleep now," flooded the platform. One user, MJ, directly asked, "What did Noel say to get bleeped over? The crowd booed. What did he say?" Another viewer, Clare, reminisced about past awards shows, wishing for more edgy content and lamenting that "Awards have gone soft these days. Everything is getting censored. Bring back the Brat awards." Billy echoed this sentiment, questioning the censorship given the time of night and stating, "It’s time for adult entertainment ffs."
