Every word from Arteta's post-match press conference following the Liverpool game | Interview | News
After the goalless draw against Liverpool on Thursday, Mikel Arteta took time to discuss the key points from the match during his post-game press briefing.
The manager addressed various topics including the team’s performance, the disappointment of dropping two points, the chances created, an incident involving Gabriel Martinelli and Conor Bradley, and Viktor Gyokeres' performance among other matters.
Here’s a detailed recap of his comments...
On the Match:
"Naturally, our goal was to secure a victory, but we unfortunately fell short in the first half. We had several opportunities and found ourselves in advantageous positions. Typically, when you get into those areas, you can expect a goal. In the second half, we dominated more, although we struggled to maintain control due to two key issues. First, we gave away some very unnecessary passes, which is unusual for us, and it hindered our ability to move forward cohesively as a team. When that happens, we lose our compactness, allowing the opponent to drop back defensively and control the midfield without a significant threat in our box. They had possession, yet I don't believe they managed a single shot on target tonight. Hence, we faced challenges in asserting our dominance and posing a threat near their goal."
On Creating Chances:
"We had the right movement and players in position, but there were two or three occasions where we needed to occupy spaces differently to convert those chances into goals. Despite these missed opportunities, we did show good discipline, ensuring that we didn’t concede anything against the reigning champions. This aspect was crucial."
On Feeling Like a Missed Opportunity:
"Yes, every time we leave the pitch without a win, it feels like a missed chance. However, if we had secured a win, we could have been 12, 15, or even 20 points ahead. I have to commend the team and each player for their efforts during this demanding Christmas period; the schedule has been incredibly taxing. Their performance has been commendable. To emerge from this phase with all the challenges we've faced and still be in a strong position speaks volumes about their resilience. They truly deserve recognition for their hard work."
On Support from Fans:
"We will keep pushing forward. I'm incredibly grateful for the incredible atmosphere and unwavering support from our fans. It's vital for us. We're currently in a solid position and must continue this momentum since the season is still in its early stages, and we need our supporters behind us."
On Martinelli's Incident with Bradley:
"Knowing Gabi, he’s a wonderful individual. I doubt he fully realized what had transpired. I plan to speak with Conor as well to ensure he understands the situation better. I believe he might not have been fully aware of what occurred either."
On Sustaining Performance Levels:
"I've sensed this since August. I think everyone involved—managers, players, and teams—feels the same because of the level of competition in this league. The challenge is apparent."
On Players' Difficulties:
"What makes me proud is understanding just how tough this is and recognizing what our players have accomplished. Their determination is remarkable and commendable."
On Gyokeres' Contribution:
"He found himself in excellent positions, but there were times when the pass didn’t reach him. There were situations where typically we would find ourselves close to scoring, especially in the six-yard box. Normally, those are moments where we capitalize and score. We missed those opportunities today, and that's an area we must improve upon moving forward. Additionally, our performance in the second half didn’t quite meet the standards we're accustomed to."
On What He's Most Proud Of This Season:
"The team's desire to win and the consistency they've shown have been outstanding. Facing the demanding schedule ahead, coupled with the challenges we're navigating, their accomplishments are truly impressive. We aim to keep learning and improving, as each match presents an opportunity to do so. Let’s remember, we played against the current champions today, who are an exceptional team. We will reflect on this performance and then regroup tomorrow as we prepare for another game on Sunday."
