The Horrors of S-21: A Look Back at Cambodia's Dark History (2026)

On January 10, 1979, a harrowing scene unfolded at the former Tuol Svay Prey High School in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Vietnamese photographer Ho Van Tay stumbled upon a sight that would forever haunt him: the remains of a prison and interrogation center, where the Khmer Rouge regime had committed unspeakable atrocities. The Khmer Rouge had forcibly evacuated the city in 1975, aiming to turn Cambodia into an agricultural collective under their extreme communist agenda. But the school remained operational as a prison and interrogation center, holding up to 1,000 people at a time. The conditions were brutal: prisoners were chained, forbidden to speak, and fed meager rations. Those who dared to defy the rules faced brutal punishments, including beatings and electric shocks. One of the most chilling rules was that prisoners were not allowed to cry during their beatings. The guards, mostly teenagers, were strictly prohibited from conversing with the prisoners. Under torture, prisoners were forced to write false confessions, implicating themselves and others in conspiracies with foreign intelligence agencies like the CIA and KGB, as well as the Vietnamese authorities. These prisoners were then taken to killing fields and executed using makeshift weapons, as ammunition was scarce. Of the 20,000 people detained at S-21, only 12 survived. The prison's chairman, Kang Kek lew, a former math teacher, was not brought to justice until 2012. He spent just eight years in prison before dying of natural causes. The Khmer Rouge genocide between 1975 and 1979 is estimated to have claimed the lives of a quarter of Cambodia's population. This dark chapter in history serves as a stark reminder of the horrors that can arise from extreme ideologies and the importance of standing against tyranny.
