The Seas Pavilion at EPCOT: Celebrating 40 Years of Ocean Magic! 🎉🐠 (2026)

This month marks a significant milestone—the 40th anniversary of The Seas pavilion at EPCOT. Originally opened as The Living Seas in 1986, this beloved attraction is currently known as The Seas with Nemo & Friends.

Celebrating 40 Years of Oceanic Wonder

Dr. Mark Penning, who serves as the Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment, recently hinted at the excitement surrounding this anniversary on Instagram. He wrote, "Since 1986, this EPCOT pavilion has inspired guests and deepened appreciation for the importance of our oceans. Follow along all month as we continue to celebrate this milestone!" This playful teaser invites fans to engage with the ongoing festivities honoring this iconic attraction.

The journey of The Living Seas began long before EPCOT opened its gates in 1982. Initially slated to debut in 1984, the pavilion faced several delays but eventually welcomed its first visitors on January 15, 1986. For many years, it was supported by United Technologies until 1998.

Upon its grand opening, guests were treated to an educational film about ocean life, titled The Sea. Following the film, they experienced the Hydrolator—a simulated elevator ride that transported them to the ocean floor—before embarking on the Caribbean Coral Reef Ride. The adventure concluded in the impressive SeaBase Alpha aquarium, an underwater spectacle that captivated audiences.

In a noteworthy transformation, the pavilion underwent a re-theme in 2003, shortly after the debut of the animated film Finding Nemo. One of the most popular additions, Turtle Talk with Crush, opened in November 2004 and quickly became a favorite among guests of all ages. In August 2005, the pavilion closed for renovations, and when it reopened in November 2005, it featured Turtle Talk in a more spacious setting, alongside delightful new decorations inspired by Finding Nemo.

However, the Caribbean Coral Reef Ride did not remain operational for long; it closed in late 2001 due to a dip in visitor numbers. It was later refreshed and transformed into The Seas with Nemo & Friends, which opened its doors in early 2007, offering a new experience centered around the beloved characters from the film.

Recently, Disney has implemented several design enhancements to The Seas. Among these updates are newly installed signage for both the SeaBase aquarium and the Coral Reef Restaurant, providing clearer guidance and enhancing the overall aesthetic. Additionally, the pavilion’s façade received a vibrant new color scheme and updated lighting in late 2023, making it even more visually appealing.

In a shift towards conservation, last year the aquarium transitioned from serving as a long-term care facility to focusing on short-term rehabilitation of marine life, specifically Florida manatees. Excitingly, the diver lock-out chamber demonstration also made a comeback after a five-year hiatus, allowing guests to witness firsthand the complexities of underwater exploration.
