A storm is brewing at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), with staff delivering a resounding vote of no confidence in Vice-Chancellor Andrew Parfitt. The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) spearheaded the vote, revealing that a staggering 95% of participating staff expressed their lack of confidence in the Vice-Chancellor. Out of approximately 4,000 UTS staff, 1,549 cast ballots, with an overwhelming 1,465 voting no confidence and a mere 84 expressing confidence.

The role of consultants: The university's decision to spend $7 million on consultants, KPMG, to design a change management proposal, known as the Operational Sustainability Initiative, has also come under scrutiny. Critics argue that major decisions are being driven centrally by the Vice-Chancellor, stifling academic governance and creating a climate of fear. The university maintains that the proposal is essential to secure its future, as it is spending more than it earns.
A Question of Trust and Transparency: The situation intensified when it was revealed that the Vice-Chancellor's contract had been extended for another five years without informing staff. This lack of communication, coupled with the ongoing financial concerns, has further eroded trust.
The response from key figures: Greens deputy leader Mehreen Faruqi and NSW upper house Labor MP Sarah Kaine have both called for the Vice-Chancellor to resign, echoing the sentiments of the staff. Dr. Kaine stated that the current governance arrangements "do not pass the pub test, let alone any test of good governance."
